First released in 1955, The Violent endure It Away is now a landmark in American literature. it's a darkish and soaking up instance of the Gothic sensibility and bracing satirical voice which are united in Flannery O'Conner's paintings. In it, the orphaned Francis Marion Tarwater and his cousins, the schoolteacher Rayber, defy the prophecy in their useless uncle--that Tarwater turns into a prophet and may baptize Rayber's younger son, Bishop.
The sensational bestselling tale of Little Nell, the attractive baby thrown right into a shadowy, terrifying international, turns out to belong much less to the background of the Victorian novel than to folklore, fairy story, or fantasy. The sorrows of Nell and her grandfather are offset through Dickens's production of a blinding modern global inhabited by way of a few of his such a lot brilliantly drawn characters-the eloquent ne'er-do-well Dick Swiveller; the hungry maid referred to as the "Marchioness"; the mannish attorney Sally Brass; Quilp's brow-beaten spouse's mother; and Quilp himself, the lustful, vengeful dwarf, whose demonic power makes a vibrant counterpoint to Nell's purity.

Among the real conflicts the narrator evokes in the passage cited above are the ongoing tensions between French Protestants (known as Huguenots) and Catholics. A minority of the French population, the Huguenots were often the victims of religious persecution by the Catholic majority during the period in which Dumas舗s story takes place. Louis XIII舗s father, King Henri IV, had been born into a Protestant family but converted to Catholicism in order to ascend the French throne. The Edict of Nantes Henri promulgated in 1598 sought to provide his former coreligionists freedom of worship and a limited number of (geographical) safe havens but did not always fully afford them the protections it was intended to guarantee.
