First, a dead dinosaur somehow fell or was washed into a body of water, usually a river or lake. There the bones were buried by clay or sand called sediment in the water. After thousands or sometimes millions of years, the organic matter of the bones was replaced by minerals as water passed through the sediment. Eventually most or all of the bones' original matter was replaced so the bones became petrified. Only in rare cases are complete (or nearly complete) dinosaur skeletons found. Many dinosaurs are known only from a few pieces of fossil.

Both dinosaurs boasted rows of small bony plates and scutes along the neck, back, and tail. But Scelidosaurus was more heavily armored than Scutellosaurus although the latter had another advantage. Being smaller and lighter, Scuttelosaurus could get up on its hind legs and run away quickly from a dangerous situation. The bigger, heavier Scelidosaurus had a much more difficult time escaping on all fours. Page 73 Page 74 Roofed Lizards The "roofed lizards," or Stegosauria, are easily identified by the two rows of plates and spikes that adorned their necks, backs, and tails.

Many dinosaurs are known only from a few pieces of fossil. Some dinosaurs have been named based upon the discovery of only a partial bone, or fossil scrap. In fact, most dinosaur skeletons on display are at least partially incomplete and had to be reconstructed with bones from other species or resculptured. Fossils are vital clues to the great mystery that is the history of Earth.
