We were living to die, pretty much, but we had no idea. There is one guy I know who several years ago was building golf courses with Jack Nicklaus, handling billionaires’ ﬁnances. Now he’s running a publicly traded company worth millions. Sounds great, right? Well, he just got diagnosed with ulcers; his physical system has begun to break down, as that is usually the ﬁrst thing to go, and I know that this is just the beginning for him. It should be said that he’s also a specimen of physical ﬁtness, does not drink coffee, and does not smoke.
What’s even more interesting is that many of the parents are very successful ﬁnancially or otherwise, and evidently had great discipline themselves. But somehow, they were unable to pass this on to their children. Practicing discipline is like working out, only more intense and, eventually, at least as rewarding. Overall success in life requires that you “work out” with discipline in all the important areas: ﬁnancial, educational, self-worth, familial, spiritual, philanthropic, and whatever other elements are important to you.
My life at the time was very much about survival, in the way that people who have little to nothing know every day. I was a chameleon and could adjust my needs to ﬁt in pretty much anywhere.
