Fourteen Europeans died and twenty-one Japanese guards were tried for their murder after the war. 41 Senior Japanese officers and officials were aware of the level of brutality practised on the prisoners and Asians, and even encouraged it to a greater or lesser degree. The Hayashi Division in Burma, for example, issued 'Notes for the Interrogation of Prisoners of War' which advised those involved only to use kicking, beating and other tortures as a last resort.
