That seems obvious, but it is important, and many people miss the point. “Oh, I was just thinking,” but what were you thinking about? You were thinking about some form of content, idea, desire, feeling, worry, and problem; you were thinking about something, not nothing. When you are doing that, the nature of the content is important and is related to some kind of structure. When we talk about how your children are learning to think, the content about which they are thinking is a crucial issue. The relation between the act of thinking and the stuff that one is thinking about is very important.
The majority of teachers and students currently approach content not as a mode of thinking, not as a system for thought, and not even as a system of thought but rather as a sequence of stuff to be routinely “covered” and committed to memory. When content is approached in this way, there is a very limited basis for intellectual growth; there are no deep structures of knowledge formed, no basis for long-term grasp and control, and no true thinking. TWO SOURCES OR TYPES OF STRUCTURE There are two types of structure: those of the field (subject, discipline, and reality) and those created by each individual child and student.
Each piece interacts with each other unit, and if something is out of place, other things will not work. Besides my psychology and education structures, which are vast, interrelated, and coordinated and allow me to exercise my profession, I have other structures that are part of my experience and certainly part of my interests. My first degree was in literature, and I have read ravenously for years, so I have a rather well-developed literature structure that allows me to choose, enjoy, evaluate, and talk about novels, genres, and authors in a reasonably refined manner.
